Super week back at school!
We have had a "SUPER' start to Term 4.
We have built lairs, planned traps to catch the bad guys, weaved our way through lasers to save little furries, hid our identies with masks, battled slime, phoned superheros and so much more.
We also learnt that not all heros wear capes like doctors, nurses, teaches, mums or dads. Oh and flash too!

Patterns
This week we have been learning about patterns. We looked around and found patterns in our classroom, then we made some patterns ourselves. We used our bodies and what we were wearing to make patterns, and realised that there could be more than one pattern.
Our artwork has patterns - landscape/portrait/landscape/portrait...
Our teacher was making a boy/girl/boy/girl pattern, but we discovered that there was more than once pattern, can you see the others? There are four other patterns.
We found patterns on our new mat...
We can even make patterns with our classroom equipment
Look at this great pattern...
Lots of our new mats have patterns we found...

What is Matariki/Puhanga?
At
first we thought Matariki/Puhanga was about
- Children
- My self
- Spanish
- No no naki a
- Singing
- Hello
- They have to have actions.
- Family
- They are brothers
- They are sisters
- We sang a song.
After
learning about Matariki/Puhanga through songs, stories, art, HOLT learning and
our families.
Thank
you Kylie for coming in and helping us learn more about Puhanga, teach us a new
waiata as well as guiding us in weaving a Puhanga star.
This
is what we think now.
- It’s the Maori New Year.
- Its called matariki.
- In Wanganui, we call it Punga.
- We celebrate the 7 sisters, they are stars in the sky.
- We celebrate by telling stories, made kites, shared food, we fish, gardening, grow new plants and look after them.
- We see the Puhanga star outside our window.
- We think about those who have past away and remember their lives.

Assembly
Today was our turn to take assembly.
We were feeling lots of different emotions about taking assembly from being scared and nervous about talking into the microphone to happy and excited that our families were coming to watch us.
We sang the library song, read our favourite Greedy Cat big book 'The New Cat' and shared our greedy cat art. We are very proud of the job we did.
Here is a movie made out of picture Miss Nation kindly took for us.

Non-standard Measurement
He Puna Aranga spent the middle block of the morning outside experimenting with non-standard measurement. The children were given maths equipment to measure a given area outside. The first group were given the straws to measure the path to the drop off bay. The second group measured the blue bench outside the junior classrooms-using small sticks. The third group had popsicle sticks and measured the black seat. The fourth group were given interlocking cubes and measured around the sandpit. The fifth group had a variety of different equipment to measure around the junior playground.
The learning investigation: How many of your equipment does it take to measure how long the sandpit is? or the area they were given.
The children set out problem solving ways to measure these large areas. We saw teamwork happening as the children took turns with the equipment. Some people were given the job as 'fixers' to ensure there were no gaps between each popsicle stick, cubes, straws etc. Predictions were made as the children guessed how long was their area. Big numbers were used to describe how many of each material it took to measure the length or circumference.
Watch the videos below of some children explaining their learning.
We are learning about Measurement!
This term, measurement is our focus for maths in the New Entrant Pod. We have started out learning about height. We introduced the new vocabulary of short, medium and tall. We compared different objects in the classroom and had a go at putting ourselves into height order.
Our classroom has a height chart on the cloak bay door. We each wrote our name on a white sticker to mark our height on the chart. This is a visual way for the children to see how tall they are. We made comparisons by asking 'who is taller?' and 'who is shorter?' This lead into a good conversation of how our height does not measure our age.

A great start to Term 2!
We have had a bounced back into school with big smiles! From making superhero masks, listening to superhero stories and building superhero vehicles. We even have a superhero small world station. Sadly some of our spider men have lost there arms but Giacon has become an expert at discovering different ways of fixing them.

What shoes do we have most of in Rooms 11 and 12?
We have read a book called 'Whoose Shoes'. It was about sorting lots of different shoes that got mixed up. Today we mixed up our shoes and sorted them by how they look. We had shoes with laces, buckles, velcro and slip ons. We lined them up and compared the shoes. The questions were asked: What shoes do we have most of? and What shoes do we have least of? After much discussion, counting, sorting and comparisons, we made a class pictograph to record our findings.

Writing/Art: Where is Green Sheep?
We listened to a story called Where is the green sheep?
After we listened to it we practiced writing our popwords (sightwords) 'here', 'is' and 'the'. We decided to write our own "Here is the green sheep." style sentence but using our own imagination. We drew sheeps just like the illustrator in the story and created our backgrounds using dye.
Here is our own class version of the book "Where is the green sheep?
