Who am I?

Today the Hippo reading group made their own 'I am' story. The children have been learning to find their names and then point and recognise their very important 'first letter'. Our sentence starter has been 'I am' and they have become known 'popwords' for the children. They helped me write their sentence and then each child glued their name and photo. Using our pointer fingers we read our own sentences, by pointing under each word and bouncing over the spaces. We now know that a sentence always finishes with a full stop.

Our Very Hungry Caterpillar Week

This week we have reading the story "The very hungry caterpillar" by Eric Carle.

Here is a collage with some of the things in our class this week.

We did

  • observational drawings of a swamp plant, butterflies and caterpillars.
  • used the ipad to explore "The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends' app.
  • sequenced picture cards and retold each other the story using picture cards and playdough.
  • made homes for the hungry caterpillar using straws made caterpillars out of egg cartons.
  • listened to eric carl's stories (see our listening to reading, under the reading tab).
  • ordered numbers from 1 to 10 to make a caterpillar.
  • made grape and marshmallow caterpillar fruit kebabs.

Here are some of our clever kids retelling the story of the hungry caterpillar for you.

Self Portrait

In our class we have been talking about 'What makes me special?'. We realised that one thing that made us unique was the way we looked. Some of us had different eyes or hair or skin. Others had similar eyes or hair or skin but all of us look different and that makes us special!

Here are our self portraits. We drew them using mirrors to look at the different features of our face.

What does the tide bring in?

This week our big book was called "What does the tide bring in?"

We learnt our popwords 'in' and 'the'.

We had a small beach in our classroom.
This is driftwood - Jack
I like the sand. - Lily.
I like the shells. - Cassady
Why are these rocks different? - Seth

We explored what happened to sand paper when you added chalk and/or dye.
It is rough. -  Chase
It's (the chalk) all dusty. - Dustin
It's bumpy. - Piper

Making Pizza

We were inspired by our pizza playdough imaginative play to make some real pizzas! We talked about what we would like on our pizzas and then we created a plan of our pizzas.

Here are our designs for our perfect pizzas with what ever toppings we wished for.

Weren't we creative!!! Sadly we couldn't make these in class but we did have the choice of tomato, cheese, ham, and pineapple muffin pizzas. We had lots of fun following the process of spreading on the tomato paste, adding the topping and putting it the oven but best of all we got to eat them!!!!

Our Name Rocket

We have been working hard to learn how to read and write our names. We created some spacey art to show off our skills.

Graphs

Welcome to the New Entrant Pod! We are an amazing class of 19 five year olds and our teacher are Miss Slight and Miss Ravindran. We normally learn in Rooms 11 and 12 but because we are getting brand new toilets and cloak bays (yay!), we will be learning in the Library for the first couple of weeks. For some of us this is our first week at school, so we have been learning a few facts about ourselves and using graphs to display these facts. Here are two graphs we made in two different ways.

Did you know that there are more boys that girls in our class? How do we know? The line of blue squares are longer than the line of pink squares.

We also used our bodies to make a graph. See our boys line is longer than our girls line.

Girls             Boys

This is our cat vs dogs body graph. We found out that we had an equal number of cat and dog lovers in our class! Isn't that cool!

Cats          Dogs

We also realised that more boys like dogs and more girls like cats....I wonder why...
